Ausflug: (Fookin') Bruges

My parents were here for a visit to meet Emmie in April. Since they flew all the way over from California, it made sense to visit a few other places in Europe while they were here. One of these places was Bruges, in  Belgium. Now, the only reason I know of Bruges is because of the very wonderful movie In Bruges. A strange little black comedy about two Irish hit men that are forced to lay low 'In Bruges' for awhile. One of the hit men played by ColinFarrell is deeply irritated at having to be there. He keeps referring to it as Fu*king Bruges, but with an Irish accent 'Fookin' Bruges'. As a result, I  ant refer to Bruges without...

Ausflug: Rovinj, Croatia

May kicks off a series of public holidays, most of which land on a Thursday, Friday or Monday. It’s not really a deliberate routine, but we usually end up taking a short trip some where when one of these long weekends arrives. One of the things I love about living in Europe, and specifically Munich, is that you can drive 4 to 5 hours in any direction and be in another country; The Czech Republic, Austria, Italy(!), France. Over the last couple of years though, we’ve taken a particular shine to making a beeline directly south to Slovenia and Croatia. Last year we spent time on the gorgeous Istrian peninsula in Croatia. We stayed in the charming town of Rovinj,...

Ausflug - Mexico, Part 1: Oaxaca

You may have seen a few posts back that I was on a looong vacation in Mexico. You may have even followed along with the few photos I posted on the e.m.papers Instagram feed. I didn't post a lot, mostly because I am bad about taking photos, and also I was happily unplugged most of the time and just enjoying the moment. I'm breaking this post up into two parts: Oaxaca and Tulum. Those are the two places we went. Oaxaca is a southern state of Mexico located on the Pacific side. It is known for it's rich history in the arts and especially it's celebration of Dia de Los Muertos. There's a major university there and it's full of young Mexican...

Ausflug: Strasbourg

It's high time I shared another Ausflug with you guys! Last August was a real downer weather-wise in most of Europe. We wanted to take a little jaunt over one of the 3-day weekend holidays, with the thought that we'd catch some nice northern Italian sun. Nice idea, but it was cold and rainy. So instead of trying to follow the sun to Portugal or Turkey (like every other person on the continent) we accepted what the weather Gods had to offer and headed north-west to Strasbourg, France. It was Armin's mother's birthday and they were celebrating around his home town, about 20 minutes from the French border, so we figured we surprise everyone on the way back to Munich....

Ausflug: Lech, Austria

There is a German saying that I find myself using whenever we find ourselves in the Bavarian or Alpine countryside 'Hier ist der Welt noch in Ordnung' literally it translates to "Here the world is still in order." This describes Lech, Austria. About two and a half hours from Munich it's a low key but pretty tony ski destination, as well as a lovely place to spend a summer weekend. We spent a long weekend there with some friends, hiking, relaxing and generally enjoying life. Below are some pix and Instagrams I took. They do a poor job of capturing the vast, expansive beauty of the place. ...Aaannd cue Julie Andrews (The Hills are Alive with the sound of myooosic.....)...
